Since 2010, CoolSculpting® has offered patients a highly effective nonsurgical alternative to liposuction. Each product in its range uses the same cooling technology to freeze and destroy fat cells; however, each model has its own specialties and advantages.

What Are CoolSculpting Treatments?

CoolSculpting treatments use cryolipolysis (cell breakdown through freezing) to contour the body. The specialized applicators preferentially target fat cells, leaving the surrounding skin unharmed as stubborn, localized pockets of fat are treated using cooling and suction.

Once “frozen,” the fat cells are broken down and naturally metabolized, leading to a gradual—but largely permanent—slimming of the patient’s figure (usually by 20% to 25%). CoolSculpting is not a weight loss treatment, however. It is intended as a spot treatment for those areas of the body that resist diet and exercise, such as a double chin, love handles, and bra line bulge.

CoolSculpting (Legacy)

The original CoolSculpting machine revolutionized body contouring when it was introduced over a decade ago. It offered a viable alternative to surgical liposuction with impressive, long-lasting results: no downtime or incisions necessary.

CoolSculpting traditionally worked on “pinchable” fat that could be suctioned into the cooling panels. Over the years, technological advances led to the development of newer CoolSculpting applicators, including ones that treated smaller, more delicate areas.

CoolSculpting Advantage

The Advantage range of applicators was developed to treat areas like the flanks (love handles) and abdomen and finer areas such as the inner thighs, upper arms, and along the bra line.

One of the most significant improvements of the Advantage applicator series was shorter treatment times. Most patients could complete a session in as little as 35 minutes instead of an hour with the original applicator.

In addition, CoolSculpting Advantage offered real-time monitoring to ensure that the fat was evenly targeted. Advances in technology also made the Advantage applicators more comfortable, requiring less suction and facilitating a more efficient treatment with more comfort.

CoolSculpting Mini

Introduced in 2015, the CoolSculpting Mini applicator sought to address smaller areas of excess fat, reducing submental (under the chin) fat, armpit fat, and fat that accumulates around the knees. These were areas typically reserved for a liposuction procedure such as Smartlipo®.

Like CoolSculpting Advantage, CoolMini treatments could generally be completed within 35 minutes. The applicators maximized their surface area for the most comprehensive result possible at the time.

CoolSculpting Elite

The newest product in CoolSculpting technology (and at our practice), CoolSculpting Elite was introduced in 2021, building on the advances and learnings of previous technology and applicators. It is FDA-cleared to treat localized fat in the following areas:

• Inner and outer thighs
• Abdomen
• Flanks (love handles)
• Bra line
• Back
• “Banana rolls” (fat that accumulates beneath the buttocks)
• Upper arms
• Submental (under the chin) fat
• Submandibular (under the jaw) fat

Like its predecessors, CoolSculpting Elite underwent numerous design upgrades for enhanced comfort and performance.

Seven applicator heads can be used in CoolSculpting Elite treatment:

• 4 Curve series applicators for small, moderate, and large areas of pinchable fat
• 2 Flat series applicators for vertical areas of pinchable fat such as the inner thighs and upper arms
• The Surface applicator for nonpinchable areas of fat, such as the lateral thigh and upper abdomen

Providers have remarkable flexibility in customizing the procedure, allowing them to create a personalized approach that suits every patient’s anatomy.

Faster Treatments (and Twice the Treatment Areas!)

CoolSculpting Elite can treat 2 areas of fat simultaneously, making it an especially effective body contouring option. Dual applicators mean that patients can treat twice as many trouble spots in half the time, saving them significant amounts of time.

Faster, Better Results

With a nearly 20% higher level of skin contact than previous models, CoolSculpting Elite produces quicker and more robust results (up to 5% greater fat reduction than its predecessors). Visible improvements can be seen as soon as 4 weeks following a CoolSculpting Elite treatment, with improvements continuing over the next 2 to 3 months.

Compare this to the original CoolSculpting model, which could take 3 to 4 months before the results were visible.
