Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery
Any adult male concerned about the way his chest appears because of excess fatty tissue is a good candidate for Smartlipo with Dr. Johnson.
All men experience some degree of breast enlargement during puberty, but for some, the enlargement is more noticeable and can be embarrassing — and instead of regressing, the enlarged breast tissue remains. This can lead to the avoidance social situations in which they would have to take off their shirts (such as the pool or the beach). Gynecomastia can also be caused by anabolic steroid use, medications, hormonal imbalances, genetic disorders, testicular tumors, or marijuana use.
Other men who are significantly overweight may have breasts that appear overly large; this is called pseudogynecomastia. Aging can also cause older men to start noticing enlarged breasts due to hormonal changes.
Procedure
Gynecomastia comes from excess fat in the chest, overdeveloped glandular tissue, or a combination of both. In cases where the gynecomastia is primarily localized fatty tissue, liposuction is the preferred treatment. Dr. Johnson uses a technique called Smartlipo, a type of laser-assisted liposuction. Dr. Johnson’s Advanced Aesthetics is a National Training Center for Cynosure®, the laser company that manufactures and sells the Smartlipo Triplex™, Cellulaze™, and PrecisionTx™ lasers.
As with traditional liposuction, the procedure for male breast reduction begins with infusing the treatment area with a liquid solution that combines a local anesthetic and epinephrine. This makes the fat easier to extract. After injecting the solution, Dr. Johnson inserts a very small tube that looks like a wand — called a cannula — under the skin to perform laser lipolysis and cauterization of blood vessels.
He then moves a disruptor cannula back and forth, breaking up the fatty and glandular tissue and causing it to liquefy. He can then easily suction the tissue from the body using the cannula. The laser helps limit bleeding, which is one of the reasons that patients typically experience less bruising and discomfort with Smartlipo (compared to traditional liposuction). Occasionally, a small area of firm, fibrous tissue remains. This remaining tissue can be easily removed by excision.
Recovery & Results
The downtime following Smartlipo is usually shorter than what is expected following other liposuction procedures. Most patients can return to normal activities after a couple of days. It can take several more weeks for swelling to fully resolve, though, so you may not notice the final results until then.
Dr. Johnson’s expertise with liposuction enables him to sculpt a contoured and more masculine-looking chest — in the right proportion to the rest of your body. Because the fat cells are permanently removed, the results you see will last for many years, provided you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
